Differences Between Electronic Money and QR Code Payments for Beginners

E-money (like Suica, iD) and QR payments (like PayPay, Rakuten Pay) are both cashless, but run on different tech and serve different use cases. We explain their structural differences in simple terms.

Electronic Money (NFC / FeliCa)

Payments are made instantly by tapping your device/card against a reader (using FeliCa NFC technology).

  • Examples: Suica, PASMO, iD, QUICPay, WAON, nanaco
  • Pros: Lightning-fast transaction speed. No internet connection required (works underground).
  • Cons: Requires physical card or manual balance management if not automated.

QR Code Payments

Requires showing a barcode on your phone screen or scanning a paper QR code at a store.

  • Examples: PayPay, Rakuten Pay, d払い, au PAY
  • Pros: Pure mobile wallet. Yields massive promotional points. Supports P2P transfers.
  • Cons: Takes several seconds to open apps and scan. Useless if your phone has no internet service.

Which One to Use?

  • For speed & transit: E-money (Suica, etc.)
  • For campaign savings: QR code payments (PayPay, etc.)
